Finding the perfect bag when you’re having a baby is no easy feat. Take it from me, I was so frustrated by the choice of baby changing bags available during both my pregnancies 5 years ago I had to create my own brand to get what I wanted! When I was pregnant, I really couldn’t believe the lack of options out there, they were either very ugly and functional or quite pretty but not functional enough.
I also thought that if I was actually going to spend a considerable amount on a bag. I didn’t really want it to be a changing bag at all because that meant I could only use it for the early years and only when I was with my baby.
If I planned to go from a play to a meeting or from lunch with fellow parents, then straight out to dinner I certainly didn’t want to be seen in with my changing bag on date night!
So if you are looking for a new bag, pregnant or not, how to know what to get based on your needs can be tricky! I know, as all my bags offer something quite different. Therefore, I’ve put together this quick little guide to help you when deciding what bag to buy.
Having a first baby or a light packer?
If you are having your first baby, you really don’t need that much at the start when you first get out and about, but these babies grow and as they do you’re going to need more things and a bag big enough to accommodate it all! Most people find it quite difficult to move from their normal handbag to a backpack straight away as many have never carried a backpack before, but you don’t want to be carrying to two bags and this is why the Lennox exists. It’s an amazingly versatile bag that you can wear three ways either over your shoulder, across your body and, now, as a backpack for those times when you really need to have your hands free!
The beauty of the Lennox is it looks like an ordinary handbag. We have lots of Kitgirls who use this as a normal bag and find it great for work and that’s what makes it so perfect for you and your baby too - nobody will know that inside your gorgeous looking bag you are housing nappies, wipes and all the things you need to keep you on point and surviving during your day out with baby!
Onto baby number two or need to commute?
If you are on your second baby and you already have one toddler running around then this is the perfect time to get yourself a backpack. I promise you won’t regret it and with our designs, finally backpacks don’t have to be just functional and ugly they can be gorgeous too!
Our Joy and Joy XL have won the platinum award for the best changing bag with the Junior Design Awards. It’s been with us from the start and, over the past few years, we have made small improvements and now it’s pretty much perfect! This gorgeous backpack is also super functional when you need it most. The shape is more of a classic style with two way zips and easy access at the top and it has 4 bottle holders so you can keep your water on the outside for you and your toddler. Inside, the insulated bottle holders will keep your babies' milk bottles warm or cooler for longer periods and they also keep your bottles upright, so no more spills - genius.
Laptop compatible up to 13 inches on the standard Joy and 14 inches on the Joy XL, this backpack will take you from the 5 am feed to Namaste at 9, your team meeting at 10 and onto a quick trip or weekend break after work.
Love a backpack but want it to be a bit more feminine?
A slightly newer backpack to the range is the Amber and it’s already taking the parenting and commuting world by storm, thanks to her sleek contemporary looks. The boxy base ensures she sits up to attention perfectly and houses everything you need for a day out.
This bag is so versatile it’s also great as a cabin bag and for every day commuting to work thanks to the handy laptop sleeve and magic trolley sleeve covers - really the list of uses is endless! Both the Joy XL and the Amber are perfect bags for mothers of multiples too.
For the lady who loves a handbag
If you’re somebody that just can’t do backpacks and wants a more ladylike look then Thea is the perfect bag for you. It has a classic shape, with the option of a crossover strap or over the shoulder carry option. It’s a very elegant mummy bag and allows you to gracefully glide through security or days out with ease. Internally it has the same layout as the Lennox and the Thea XL makes a great weekender too.
Just to note the Thea XL nylon and leopard are also great if you have twins because it’s the roomiest bag in the collection.
Want all the style and functionality just a bit smaller?
Not everybody wants to carry a big bag or you may be coming out the other side of the baby / toddler phase and finding that you don’t need quite so much to carry with you each day. Well, fear not because the mummies that came before you have already been on the case and begged me to create the Midi’s. These are the same bags you have grown to know and love but just 20% smaller.
In addition to these, we also have our smaller bits of Kit to consider. If you have your bag on your back, it’s really helpful to have a small purse or cross body bag on your front which is where the Milly organiser wallet comes in.
Just the perfect size for your keys, phone, cards and a lip gloss. So when you’re doing a mad dash to make the school run or heading out for date night, you can simply grab and go knowing your essentials are all in one place.
Mums deserve a bit of luxury so this one is just for you
Finally, the Harry has been made just for you. This bag is the perfect size to house all your essentials for a day out alone or the perfect companion on a girls night out or date night. There is plenty of room for your Tilly purse, sunglasses, hand cream, lip gloss, keys and a few other essentials too. This little bag is great because you can use it as a clutch and as a cross body bag.You can choose to add your own Webster straps to really make it unique to you. Personally I love this with the Stevie strap for that added rock chick feel but during the summer, I love to switch it up and add the rainbow webbing straps for Gay pride or one of the more preppy straps such as this are the sage triple stripe. We can’t wait to show you the new ones we have coming for AW!

If, like me, you are at your best when you feel organised and well put together then these are the bags for you.
