Learning is hard and it is often a hard slog to achieve the results that we want. When we were in school education it was something that had to be endured rather than embraced. With modern technology and new teaching techniques parents have many resources at their disposal to make learning fun for their children. In this post I wanted to examine 3 ways that parents can encourage their children’s education while making it fun!
Make Lessons Active
No matter how energetic your children’s teacher is your child will spend most of their time at school sitting at a desk. Parents often find it hard to motivate their children to do extracurricular learning because when children finish school the last thing they want to do is sit down. A parent’s job is not to be a schoolteacher, but instead to help and encourage their children to learn. Dr. Amy M Schlessman states “integrating physical activity with academic concepts in the classroom has many benefits.” She goes on to inform her readers that physical activity has a positive and significant effect on children’s achievements. One way a parent could apply this would be to take their children outside to learn. For example if they are studying a science such as biology take them around the garden and make the lesson interactive.
Use Different Resources
As a parent you have access to all kinds of different activities not available at school. One subject that parents always find hard to encourage their children to study is Maths. No matter how colourful educational publishers make Maths books for schools they never inspire pupils. Parents however can invest in Maths books that the school would never use. For example books that combine art and Maths are said to inspire children to pick them up. These types of resources combine your children’s love of creativity with learning and can convey very dull concepts in interesting ways. When buying extracurricular materials parents should always be on the look out for different angles to approach the subject.
Technology Can Aid Education
In the olden days children had to study from textbooks. Today there is a wide range of learning apps available to children wherever they are. Every aspect of a subject is covered by an app whether it be spelling or the times table there will be an educational app that will present the subject as fun. These apps are great for long journeys as a good method to keep your children distracted and educated at the same time. In the past parents would force their children to study so they could play video games. Now parents can combine the two.
School time is one of the most important times in a child’s life and like most things that are good for us, children rail against it. Parents can in many ways succeed where school fails. You can make your child’s education interesting and cater it specifically to their needs. With the amount of resources available learning outside of school can become an enjoyable activity.
